Unstoppable Domains has gained ICANN accreditation, marking a significant milestone in bridging traditional domains with Web3 innovations, expanding its influence in the domain industry.
Unstoppable Domains, a key player in Web3 domain and digital identity services, has officially secured accreditation from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). This achievement enables the company to expand its domain offerings beyond Web3-specific domains, encompassing a broader array of top-level domains. With this new status, Unstoppable Domains is now positioned as the largest ICANN-accredited registrar in the Web3 sector.
This accreditation permits Unstoppable Domains to offer traditional domain extensions, including generic top-level domains (gTLDs) and country code domains (ccTLDs), while incorporating blockchain functionalities into these domains. This strategic move is anticipated to bridge the existing gap between traditional internet infrastructure and the decentralized innovations of Web3.
“Securing ICANN accreditation is a pivotal milestone for our Unstoppable community,” said Matt Gould, CEO and founder of Unstoppable Domains, during the announcement. “We are excited to broaden our reach into traditional web infrastructure while staying true to our core values of user ownership.” Along with expanding its domain portfolio, Unstoppable Domains announced plans to introduce new services, including an onchain domain marketplace and tools for managing tokenized domains. The company also revealed that it is already supporting 19 leading Web3 companies, such as Blockchain.com, as they prepare for future ICANN gTLD applications.
The overarching goal of integrating domains onchain is to empower users, brands, and companies to fully leverage the combined potential of Web3 and traditional Internet technologies, according to Unstoppable Domains’ statement.
