Telegram has introduced a new in-app browser that enables access to decentralized websites, marking a significant step towards integrating Web3 capabilities for its extensive user base.
In an announcement on July 31, Telegram highlighted that this update will bring Web3 functionalities to millions of users on the platform.
“Today’s update includes a new in-app browser that supports multiple tabs, making Web3 accessible to nearly a billion users. Additionally, we are launching a Mini App Store, introducing a new type of mini apps, and enabling users to gift Stars to friends, among other features,” the Telegram team stated.
Telegram CEO Highlights TON Sites Integration
Pavel Durov, Telegram’s CEO, elaborated on the support for decentralized websites through the TON blockchain, known as “TON Sites.” These websites will be accessible via Telegram’s mobile and desktop applications.
Durov noted that this new feature allows Telegram’s 950 million monthly users to seamlessly access Web3. “The browser allows users to switch between browsing websites and messaging, combining communication with content consumption. It includes features such as search, bookmarks, and multiple tabs,” he explained.
Enhancing Mini App Usage
Currently, over 500 million of Telegram’s users engage with mini apps monthly. The new update, part of the previously announced Mini App Store, aims to provide this user base with fresh access to games and services.
Expanding Crypto Gaming on Telegram
Telegram’s crypto-friendly ecosystem continues to attract top-tier apps, particularly in the crypto gaming sector. A prominent example is Hamster Kombat, a popular tap-to-earn game with a massive following in the crypto community. The game is poised for a significant airdrop, one of the year’s most anticipated in the sector.
Another notable game is Catizen, built on the TON blockchain. Durov recently shared that Catizen has amassed over 26 million players and generated $16 million in in-app purchases.
